Fitted Wardrobes for a Cheltenham Bedroom
Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built around an awkward chimney breast
The Brief
A homeowner in Cheltenham had a main bedroom that was working against them. A chimney breast jutted into one wall and the ceiling sloped down on one side, so off-the-shelf wardrobes simply would not sit flush or use the space properly. They wanted proper built-in storage that made the most of every inch: somewhere to hang clothes the full length of a dress or coat, banks of drawers for folded items, and open shelving for the bits that get used every day. The brief was honest and simple. Work around the awkward features rather than fight them, and leave the room feeling bigger, not smaller.
What We Did
Here is how the job went:
- Measured and designed: Took full measurements of the chimney breast, the sloped ceiling and every wall, then worked up a layout for two wardrobes that turned the alcoves either side of the chimney breast into usable, fitted storage.
- Built to measure: The carcases and internal frames were cut and built specifically for this room. Nothing was a standard size, because nothing in the room was a standard size.
- Fitted around the awkward features: Scribed the units tight to the chimney breast and stepped the top of one wardrobe to follow the sloped ceiling, so the storage runs as high as the room allows without any clumsy gaps.
- Set out the internal layout: Fitted full-length hanging rails, banks of drawers and adjustable shelving so the storage actually suits how the room is used day to day.
- Hung the doors: Fitted hinged doors with a clean, even reveal so everything lines up and the wardrobes read as part of the room rather than something added on.
- Snagged and handed over: Adjusted the doors and drawers so they sit flush and run smoothly, then cleaned up properly and left the room tidy with all the offcuts and dust removed.
The Result
Two made-to-measure wardrobes that use every inch of a room that used to waste most of it. The chimney breast and sloped ceiling are no longer a problem to work around, they are simply part of the design. The hanging rails, drawers and shelving give tailored storage for clothes that previously had nowhere sensible to go, and the built-in finish looks like it has always been there. The client was genuinely pleased with how the room turned out, and the kind of work that earns a callback for the next job.
Job Duration: Around four days on site, plus the design and build work beforehand.
